A London-based artist, by way of Sweden and Eritrea, her work is underpinned by her love for rhythms, vocal interplay and storytelling, and has been championed by the likes of Jamie Cullum and Moses Boyd.
Romance, the second single from her first EP for the South London label Albert’s Favourites, unfurls a mystical fable through an intimate tapestry of evocative harp, strings, and idiosyncratic vocals.
Sweeping us into a vivid dreamlike space, Romance is both beautiful and ambivalent. Abundant with musical riches, melodic grooves, decorative harp and tender yet percussive vocals, we are left to decode a story of promises never given but taken nonetheless.
In her own words:
“Romance is a cautionary tale about desire through the veil of something beautiful and whimsical.
I had this image of a Roman feast with its decadent abundance; carafes of wine, music, grapes, dance, and I wanted it to feel rich and playfully quaint.
But behind it is a story about a beauty that is slightly sinister, the word steal sung as an innocent melody that is meant to dance and snake around you.
It’s about the darker side of romance, one that comes with a warning:
“ All of the Romans paid for sins, none of the gold is mine,
all of the roads lead to the end, none of the fruit is ripe for you”.
