about

All voices are unique, but some really stand apart. Whether it be the tone or a person’s phrasing and delivery, sometimes a voice catches you and gets under your skin. Miryam Solomon is one of those people.

A London-based artist, by way of Sweden and Eritrea, her work is underpinned by her love for rhythms, vocal interplay and storytelling and has been championed by the likes of Jamie Cullum & Moses Boyd.

Pushing the Tide, the debut single from her first EP for the South London label Albert’s Favourites, embodies the moon-moved flows of the sea. The repeating rhythm and the rising and falling of Solomon’s voice conjure imagery of waves rushing an unchanging shore.

Pushing the Tide offers up a playful and pure sound, yet with a real depth and wisdom behind it. Domestic percussive sounds and grooves hold the listener in place, like feet planted firmly in the sand, setting Solomon’s voice free to swirl and eddy around us. The tension between almost-stuck beats and never-stopping vocals is seductive.

In her own words:

“Pushing the tide is a jigsaw of small things that have stayed with me, like the Guayla rhythm we danced to at weddings, or a fiddly phrase that I keep coming back to. I think of it, and the process of making it, as a series of parts that have come together to create a new story. I like how it sits in my body when I sing, the repetition and movement feels like a wave.

Miryam has received regular radio play through her recent collaboration with Huw Marc Bennett on his much-loved debut album Tresilian Bay. Plays from Cerys Matthews, Tom Ravenscroft, Gilles Peterson and Stuart Maconie count amongst much international support.

With a talent for unexpected rhythms and vocal lines that demand repeated listening, her beguiling solo work is sure to win many more fans this summer.
